There's nothing wrong with drinking whey after you've trained, but if you drink one an hour before it's a bit better. And it's probably even more effective if you drink one an hour before and after...

I've tended to have gotten away from this, but at my peak I would always make a big double sized MASS PRO (four scoops in about 30oz) and slowly sip 1/4 of it before lifting, another 1/4 or more during the workout, and then finish it off post.
Mix up the double and add ice cubes, and use one of the big thermos bottles. Keeps it ice cold, delicious and refreshing the whole way.
